Thread rolling is a cold-forming process. The plastic displacement of material is made thanks to 2 rolling dies :
The rolling dies rotate in the same direction and pressure on the dies causes the material to follow the die pattern.
There are 2 main processes :
- Plunge (in-feed) rolling : the thread rolls are brought radially
toward the center of the component.
- Through (thru-feed) rolling : there is axial travel of the
component through the rolling dies.
The diameter of the finished thread is determined by the size of the blank:
